I was really appalled as I saw this. Of course you can tell yourself that this is sporty and athletic but it has definitly nothing to do with slender and feminine. Hm, I'm not quite sure what to think about this. On the one hand there is a little bit pride because you know that it was hard work that makes you looking this way but on the other hand I don't know if I want to look this way. It's hard at the limit. And my boyfriend doesn't like it so much either. Of course this is not as important as my opinion but it is also a factor.
Ashtanga Yoginis out there, is there anybody who knows this problem? Of being afraid that your arms and shoulders look too beefy and mascular? I really would be glad about some comments.
But I guess there is no choice. I want to do Ashtanga, I am comitted to this tradition and this just is the way it changes my body. I can do nothing but accept this.

Hey there!
I'm so glad you commented on my blog so I could trace it back to your blog! oh man... the muscles... yes, I "suffer" from that too. I have a body type that tends to put on muscle easily (while, annoyingly, still retaining the fat around them!). Check out my post where I show a photos of my own bulky shoulders: http://ashtangayogashutup.blogspot.com/2008/09/and-beat-goes-on.html
My only suggestion, which is very hard to do, is to really try to rely on your core and bhandas when doing poses that can easily be muscled into with your shoulders. It focuses the power in a different area and allows the shoulder muscles to not take on all the burden. But... this is subtle and difficult. I think, if we're going to practice Ashtanga and we tend to put on muscles, it's just how it's going to be. I think you look beautiful, by the way! Strength is beautiful.
Hi Liz,
thankyou, your comment cheered me up a bit. I saw the photos on your blog. The thing is if I see another woman who has apparently muscles I rarely find it bad but rather admirable. Of course it is always ourself where we have the most critical eye. I think your muscles fit you very well.
Anyway your advice sounds very good and meaningful. I will try this. To work on Bhandas is always a good thing.
I think you look amazing! Oh, and just for the record...my husband and all of his friends LOVE the look of strength~~ :0) I do as well! It sure beats the "no tone" look!!!
Best~

What? I can hardly see what you're talking about?!! Seriously, I can't believe you're worried about showing a few minor curves there. It looks great. Honestly think about how beautiful swimmers' bodies are ...
I wish I looked like that I can assure you! :)
Muscles are gorgeous!
You look great. No worries.
Thank you all for your nice comments. Of course it is always a matter of opinion. I will try to find it good as apparently the most of you do. There's no other possibility anyway :-)
hi bettina, my name's Amanda, i think you look great.. i think you're lucky to gain muscles easily, i always wish i could have just a tiny bit of muscles in my arm, maybe i'll have more power, and i can do arm balances more easily..
